First thing I would do is put a set of jumper cables on the winch motor leads to see if the motor is turning, then swithc leads to see if it turned othe direction, if so you need a new solenoid.

Maybe wrong size hammer? Good luck,
maybe that was the it. i need a bigger hammer.
Try a F*RD Wrench (8lb sledge) I have recently learned from evperience the a JE*P wrench is even larger
I agree with the jumper test then back track out to the new plug location.

tried the jumper cables. hooked them to the selenoid. (on power side< red and back) and tried. would do anyting but spark. i don't think that moving the plug did anything. the selenoid click from both switches. i think its probably from water and not being used all winter. maybe i need to used the ford hammer on the winch itself

Not to the solenoid unless you hooked the to the wire going to the winch, not the ones going from battery to solenoid.

What you are trying to do is isolate where the issue is. If applying power directly to the winch makes it turn then you can back track the issue to the solenoid or switch.

The most common problem is the contacts inside the solenoid get burned, it clicks but does not make contact due to the burned contacts.

The solenoid can be taken apart and the contact points filed smooth for a clean contact if you find that the winch itself moves when power is applied directly to the terminals. Use an emory board (fingernail file) for best results.
Let us know what you find.

i guess i spoke to soon. back to not working. took the selenoid apart. no signs of being burnt. both switches work, it clicks but no movement. i am going to try the jumper cables agin and see what happens. hope is he selenoid and i can just replace it, or somethin simple. i have about 20' of cable wraped around the bumper.

I'd use a test light and start at the winch motor to see if your getting fire to the motor. If you are and nothing is happening then you need to clean your brushes or replace them if they're wore to the point that they may be shorting out. If you're not getting fire to the motor then move back to the solenoid and make sure your getting fire in and out. Always check for voltage on the stud if possible to make sure that your getting a good connection. The good thing about a test light is that you can check for voltage at the stud, the eyelet, and the wire itself to make sure you're not losing connection.

hooked he winch up to a baery and it works, but i think i have really screwed it up. can be rolling the cable up and grab ahold of it and stop the winch. will just grind the gears. i guess its time for a new one. how waterproof are the vipers? i think that might be part of he problem.

If you think the assembly is shot, go ahead and blow it apart and look for carnage. Might just find a simple fix. Both of my Vipers have been exposed to the elements since install and have had no moisture related problems. Make sure you coat the main terminals with plenty of dielectric grease and cover with the supplied boots to keep the terminals from corroding.
